Running

Here are my links for running related things. I’ve split them into categories for convenience.

Races

I’ve tried to put these in chronological order, just to make it a little easier to find things.

  • New Year’s Day Dash in Middleton. On New Year’s Day.
  • Freeze for Food in Madison. Usually the first weekend in March; it used to be in the middle of January, which is the source of the name. It’s benefit run by the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers.
  • Shamrock Shuffle in Madison. Usually on the Saturday or Sunday of the weekend closest to St. Patrick’s Day.
  • Crazylegs in Madison. Usually the last Saturday in April.
  • Lake Monona 20K in Monona and Madison. First Saturday in May.
  • Door County Half Marathon in Peninsula State Park. First weekend in May.
  • Run Madtown. This is the half marathon (5 K and 10 K too) that used to be the Spring Madison Marathon half marathon. It was rebranded in 2017.
  • Norsk Run in Mt Horeb (part of the Summer Frolic). First weekend in June.
  • Waunafest Run in Waunakee. Last Saturday in July.
  • Lodi Library Run & Walk. Second weekend in August.
  • Madison Mini Marathon (actually it’s a half marathon and there is a 5 K option too). About the middle of August.
  • Good Neighbor Fest in Middleton. The weekend before Labor Day weekend.
  • Cow Chip Classic in Prairie du Sac. Labor Day weekend
  • Cheese Days Chase in Monroe. In September of even numbered years.
  • Gilda’s Run in Middleton. Usually in October.
  • Haunted Hustle in Middleton. In October, usually the weekend before Halloween.
  • Madison Marathon. The fall races (full and half marathons) are in November usually the second weekend. The spring races (half marathon, 5 K and 10 K) have been rebranded as “Run Madtown” as of 2017.
  • Run Santa Run in Madison, usually the first weekend in December. This is an untimed run, so it’s kind of fun, at least when the weather is cooperating.

Races that are no more…

These are some of the races that I’ve taken part in, but have been canceled over the years. I’ve removed the links if they no longer point to anything useful.

  • Zoo Run Run at Madison’s Vilas Zoo. Usually on the third or fourth weekend of September. This was canceled when the Zoological Society decided to disband. The Dane County executive accused the society of basically stealing money that should have gone to the zoo, but a long investigation by the Dane County sheriff was unable to find any evidence of impropriety.
  • Hungry 4 Some Supper Myself in Baraboo. In November. I only ran this a few times and I’m not sure why the race ended.
  • Celtic 5K (Run before you crawl) in Monroe. In March a week or so before St Patrick’s Day. The race seems to have been canceled; it was a fund raiser for the Green County YMCA and the last time it was run was in 2019.
  • Tyranena Beer Run in Lake Mills. First Saturday in November. The race was canceled a few years ago. Attendance fell off during the pandemic but the costs didn’t. My fastest ever half marathon time was at this race in 2013!
  • Mad City 100K. Held at Vilas Park in Madison in April. This hasn’t been run since 2016. I only took part in the event once – I ran a leg of the 50 K relay.
  • Fall 15K in Madison. Usually in October. This was run by the UW Running Club and it was an important race for me as I worked up from doing 10 K races to doing half marathons.
  • Jingle Bell Run in Madison. Usually the second weekend in December. This was a benefit for the Arthritis Foundation. I’m not sure what happened to the race; I enjoyed running it, even though the weather was a bit unpredictable.
  • Strawberry Fest in Sun Prairie at the Colonial Club usually the third Saturday in June. Strawberry Fest is still held at the Colonial Club, but they’ve dropped the 5 and 10 K races. It’s too bad – I always enjoyed running in the races, and the T-shirt was always a good one.
  • Madison College Turkey Trot. First weekend in November. This was one of my favorite races and one of the few cross county style races that I did on a regular basis. I also liked that it was before Thanksgiving so it didn’t interfere with any Thanksgiving plans.
  • DMB Freedom Run in DeForest on July 4th. Not sure what happened with this event; I only ran in the 5 K race a couple times.
  • Frosty 5K in Madison. This is part of the Madison Winter Festival. This used to be held downtown on the Square but in 2017 it was moved to Elver Park on the southwest side of town. Around the middle of February. In 2019 the 5 K run was canceled in favor of a snowshoe scurry or something similar.
  • Frozen Five in Madison. First Saturday in March. It was organized by students at LaFollette High School as fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Not sure when they stopped doing it, but the last time I ran it was in 2013.
  • Swiftwater Fun Run in Nekoosa. This used to be held the first Saturday in August; the last race was held in 2014. It was a fun race to run and I always finished with a decent time in the 5 mile race.
  • Run for Literacy in Madison. This used to be held in September or sometimes in October; it was a fundraiser for the Literacy Network. The shirts were always great. This is one of the first races that I did when I started racing back in 1993. Back then it was called the Canterbury Run after the bookstore that sponsored it. In 2017 the location moved from State Street to the Literacy Network office on South Park Street. That was the last time that I ran it. The race was canceled in 2019.
  • Brittany Run 5K in Madison. Usually at the end of September. Not sure when this was canceled, but the last time I ran it was in 2013.
  • Ghoulish Gallop (formerly the Home Run) in Fitchburg. Around Halloween. I’m not sure when this was canceled either, but the last time I ran it was in 2014.
